Tensions are escalating in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, jeopardizing a peace deal between Manila and the Islamist rebel group the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) after seven years of frequently interrupted talks. The key sticking point is Mindanao’s Christian communities, which do not want to be absorbed into the autonomous Muslim region being offered to MILF. Overall, Muslim-Christian rivalries are being enflamed in the southern island.
